Tuesday session: Individuality, Interpretation and more on Rubato
We discuss the concept of Interpretation in music. Worth thinking about! We talked about individuality of interpretation and watched the eflute members’ versions of the first few bars of Mozart’s Andante in C. Then Abbie went more into depth on Rubato - with examples to try and recordings to compare.

Today’s warm-up worked on lots of lip and facial exercises, then experimenting with our flute embouchures. The aim is to not get stuck in the same position, to try different things, and see if there might be an even better tone inside of you!

We used 2 pieces towards the end of this video - one is Habanera from Carmen - thinking about different ways of interpreting them. There is no right way! But what a wonderful way of finding your own voice.

Warm-Up: Intervals and flexibility
Starting with the low register we increase the interval within a fifth in lots of different minor keys. Great for flexibility of embouchure and for dynamic control of each note. Another of Janna’s originals.

Warm-Up: Playing by ear and interval training part 1
One of Janna’s own goals is to be able to help people to play by ear better. This is where listening to intervals, singing and playing them comes in. Using the tune Happy Birthday we worked through five Major-key intervals. You can continue this by yourself. The worksheet I used is attached for your convenience.

Weekly session: Our Goals!
Starting off by sight-reading some Bach, we followed up on the questionnaires that have been returned. With both Janna and Abbie we dipped into some of the most common topics that were mentioned and talked about how to address these in our sessions, so that you can increase those scores!

Warm-Up: The Coldsore Session!
Abbie can’t play the flute today due to a pesky coldsore, so today’s warm-up was a little different! It featured tips about chapped/dry lips, finger stretches and exercises, tuning to voice, and a relaxing talk-through warm-up to finish. An unusual one for sure!

Tonight was a special one!! We worked on both flute parts of Leonora Overture no.3 in C Major by Beethoven. Now you can choose a part and either play along to the orchestra with a boosted 2nd flute, both flutes boosted, or just the orchestral track.

Warm-Up: Nokia Theme and Random Tunes!
We revisited Gaspar’s fantastic Nokia Ring Tone Warm-Up, this time in greater detail, before seeing where ‘Random Tune’ took us! One of the tunes was a challenge and we discussed ‘bouncing’ on notes, the last melody of the day was a beautiful Irish song.

This warm-up uses a set of exercises using Harmonics, from Gaspar Hoyos’ book “The Happy Flute” - based on Moyse’s “De la Sonorite” book.

We started all together using harmonics and comparing pitches to actual flute fingerings, played our version of the Up Down quiz, then split into 2 sessions. Both are useful - try to catch up with both of them.

A short melody based on the harmonic minor scale. In ALL keys. We explored how the raised 7th and lowered 6th of the scale create that very special sound in music.
